Verifying multiple traits simultaneously

increases reliability and security

and simplifies user experience.

A woman's face with the face outlined, indicating that it has been detected. In the back some digital identities, shown as silhouettes of people with logos of eg social and business networks.

Multimodal biometrics

BioID’s technology is called multimodal because, unlike other combined or layered biometrics, it simultaneously combines multiple biometric traits in a single, simple process. You simply look at the camera and say your name; the biometric authentication software captures and analyzes your face, your voice, and/or your iris at the same time.

Though captured simultaneously, each trait is analyzed by itself and given its own score. The scores can be combined (fused) in several different ways to provide a single yes/no decision, for instance:

  • Two of the three traits must meet a minimum score
  • All three traits must meet a minimum score
  • The scores are summed or otherwise mathematically combined and the result must meet a minimum score

Biometrics requires a balance between convenience and security, and the right setting depends on the application.

Advantages of multimodal biometrics

Accuracy

More accurate than any single biometric trait. BioID offers a high level of convenience AND strong security at the same time.

Fraud resistance

It's harder to fake multiple traits than a single one. BioID also has built-in fraud prevention techniques, so it can’t be fooled by replay attacks such as with photos or audio and video recordings.

Flexibility

If one trait temporarily changes, for instance if your voice changes when you have a cold, the other traits compensate nicely.
