The threat of online fraud.
User ID and passwords cannot prevent it.

E-commerce & online banking
According to a 2009 Gartner survey, almost half of US adults use online banking. Online banking security requirements are tightening, with the Federal Reserve stating that user ID/password authentication by itself is not sufficient to protect access to customer information or the transfer of funds. A layered or multi-factor approach, such as the combination of password with biometric authentication, is required.
Meanwhile, banking sites are not the only ones at risk. In 2008, US and Canadian online merchants lost $4 billion in fraudulent purchases. An unauthorized user could quickly make large purchases through a hijacked account with an online retailer, auction site, or payment processor. Furthermore, such accounts store vital personal information, including addresses, purchase history, and credit card or bank account numbers, which could be used to establish fraudulent accounts and make purchases elsewhere.
Protect online transactions
For both applications, BioID’s biometric authentication offers highly secure authentication that is easy to use. When a user attempts to access an account from a PC or mobile phone, a browser-based application asks the user to look at the camera and say a pass phrase. A template containing the biometric data is captured, encrypted, and sent to the server for comparison with a template captured at registration; based on this result access is granted or denied.
While the user is logged in, the system continues to monitor user presence. the user leaves the area the session is automatically locked or suspended, and unlocks or resumes upon the user’s return, providing easy protection with no user action required. Instead of or in addition to a password or other authentication technology, this solution offers strong protection of online accounts, ensuring that only the true authorized user can view and edit information, move funds, and make purchases.
