BioID can be used in any application where people need
to be authorized in order to gain access into technical systems, for example
in computer networks, in the Internet for eCommerce and eBanking, or also
at Automated Teller Machines (ATMs). In addition, BioID also secures access
into rooms and buildings.
Depending on the application, the authorization of persons can occur either through identification or verification. With the identification process, BioID establishes the identity of a person exclusively by means of his biometric traits. For verification: the person identifies himself with his name or a personal number, which is then being verified by BioID.
An additional degree of security is available with the
BioID Smart Card. The use of this solution is primarily targeted to the
areas of eBanking and eCommerce. Here, the reference template of the user
is no longer stored centrally, but on a Smart Card and remains therefore
in the possession of the user. Before the user, for example, gains access
into his bank account, he inserts his card into a reading device attached
to the computer and identifies himself with BioID.
By using the full flexibility of the SDK, BioID can also be used for a full range of products which may use "only" some of the included methods like:
BioID can be used to just submit the information about when and where a human face has been detected. Application developers can use this functionality to create e.g.
Enhanced motion detectors (give alert on detection of faces instead of just motion)
Intelligent Screensavers (react only when a face is in front of the monitor)
Gaming applications (use the player's face)
Using only the face part of the video channel, applications could react to every face found and submit those faces to the recognition engine; amongst the huge variety of possible applications is for example an automatic PC protection that unlocks the PC when the user approaches the desktop.
Of course BioID can be used as a standalone speaker identification system, too. In cases where only a microphone is required or available, applications can still be secured with BioID.
